There are fashion weeks, and then there are moments that make you stop and think — this is something else entirely. Arunachal Pradesh just delivered one of those moments.
A Grand Finale Unlike Any Other
The curtains came down on the Apatani Fashion Week and Apatani’s Next Top Model 2026 on July 2 at Hija village in Lower Subansiri district — and the night was anything but ordinary. What made it stand apart from every glittery pageant you’ve ever seen? The winners weren’t crowned in sequined gowns or sharp blazers. They walked away with their titles draped in traditional Apatani attire. That choice alone said everything. The organisers were deliberate about it — the crown-bearers are not just winners of a competition, they are now ambassadors of an entire cultural identity. That’s a powerful statement to make on a runway.
The Designs That Stole the Show
Three designers — Hibu Ollo, Leegang Ozeen and Taru Monya — brought their vision to the stage with collections that beautifully blended traditional Apatani elements with contemporary fashion. Then came “Colours of Apatani,” a themed runway segment where finalists walked in both heritage wear and modern fusion ensembles. Watching something ancient and something new coexist on the same stage, worn by the same person — that’s what indigenous fashion done right actually looks like. The crowd clearly felt it too.
The Winners Take the Stage
In the female category, Tadu Bini of Mudang Tage village claimed the top title. Hano Sumpi of Bamin village and Hage Konya of Hari village followed as first and second runners-up. On the men’s side, Nani Hao of Bulla village was declared the winner, with Mihin Lento of Tajang village and Tallo Doding of Hong village finishing as first and second runners-up respectively. Several special recognitions were also handed out — Tapi Kanya won Best Runway Walk, Hibu Omang earned Best Presence, Hiinyo Rilung was named Emerging Model Talent, and Koj Nampi took home Best Traditional Interpretation, among others.
Culture at Its Heartbeat
Beyond the runway, the evening pulsed with life. The Dani Haj Puna Clan, the SDDFC Daminda Dance Committee and The Diirey Nyimung Dance Group brought the stage alive with cultural performances that grounded the whole event in its true spirit. Singer Bullo Tajung added music to the mix, and by the time Kago Jorang — General Secretary of the Sillang Diting Dree Festival Celebration Committee and CEO of the event — delivered the vote of thanks, it felt less like a show ending and more like a community coming together.
Why This Matters
At its core, Apatani Fashion Week isn’t just about who walks the best or wears the sharpest outfit. It’s about giving weavers, artisans, designers and young talent from the region a platform they deserve. In a world where indigenous cultures are constantly fighting to stay visible, an event like this doesn’t just celebrate identity — it protects it. And that’s worth far more than any trophy.
