Continuous heavy rainfall triggered by a cloudburst has caused widespread flooding and infrastructure damage across East Siang district in Arunachal Pradesh, severely disrupting road connectivity, power supply, and daily life in multiple areas.
Major Impact on Roads and Local Infrastructure
Rivers and streams across the district swelled rapidly, leading to flash floods, riverbank erosion, and significant damage to roads, bridges, electric poles, houses, and agricultural fields. The Sibo Korong river overflowed in Pasighat township, washing away portions of local roads between the main town and GTC/IN College areas while causing extensive erosion to nearby properties.
A section of National Highway-13 between Raneghat Bridge and Ayeng village faced serious threats from sudden flood surges and debris flow. Quick intervention by local leaders, including deployment of machinery to divert water, helped prevent further damage to the vital highway link.
Restoration Efforts and Additional Disruptions
Landslides blocked the Raneghat–Bodak route, though restoration work facilitated by Mebo MLA Oken Tayeng allowed partial movement to resume toward Upper Siang district. Flood damage was also reported in Remi village along the Pasighat–Ledum–Tene road, as well as in Oyan under Ruksin subdivision, where roads, bridges, hotels, and homestays sustained heavy losses.
Bridges were washed away and houses damaged in Koyu and Kora/Korang areas near the East Siang–Lower Siang boundary. Power outages due to damaged infrastructure have compounded difficulties for residents.
District Administration Response
In response to the ongoing situation, the East Siang district administration has ordered the closure of all schools on June 29 and 30. Officials are closely monitoring water levels and have advised people in vulnerable zones to remain alert and follow safety protocols.
Local residents have called for faster restoration of damaged roads and bridges, establishment of relief measures, and long-term strategies to mitigate future flood risks in the region.
