Itanagar: The Bharatiya Janata Party in Arunachal Pradesh is taking its time to choose a candidate for the state’s lone Rajya Sabha seat, even as political interest heats up across the state.

State BJP president Kaling Moyong confirmed that the party is yet to finalise its official nominee despite several leaders showing strong interest. This development comes shortly after the Election Commission issued the notification for the election, set for June 18.

Multiple Aspirants in the Fray

According to Moyong, nearly 15 candidates, including senior BJP worker Kenyir Ringu, have either filed nominations or expressed their willingness to contest. The party is carefully evaluating all options before making a final call.

“The selection process is still ongoing. No decision has been taken yet,” Moyong stated clearly.

Key Dates to Remember:

  • Last date for filing nominations: June 8
  • Last date for withdrawal: June 11
  • Polling date: June 18 (at Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly)

Firm Denial on Leadership Change

Amid swirling rumours of internal shifts, the state BJP chief strongly dismissed any possibility of a change in leadership. He praised Chief Minister Pema Khandu’s decade-long tenure, highlighting major progress in infrastructure, education, and overall development across the state.

“There is absolutely no question of any leadership change. Pema Khandu enjoys full support and will continue to lead Arunachal Pradesh,” Moyong asserted.

First Nomination Filed

On June 2, former Itanagar Mayor Tamme Phassang became the first to formally file his nomination papers. Speaking to the media after submission, Phassang expressed his commitment to work for balanced development across all districts if elected.

He too rejected talks of any leadership crisis, saying Chief Minister Pema Khandu remains extremely popular and has the complete backing of party workers and the people.

Why It Matters

This Rajya Sabha election holds significance for Arunachal Pradesh as it comes at a time when the state is pushing for faster growth and better representation in the Upper House. The outcome will also reflect the current unity and strength of the ruling BJP in the state.

What Happens Next

All eyes are now on June 8, the final day for nominations. Political observers expect more candidates to join the race in the coming days. The BJP’s final choice will likely be announced closer to the withdrawal deadline, keeping both party insiders and political watchers guessing.
