Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh government has announced ambitious plans to transform the Subansiri Lower pondage into a world-class mountain-cum-river tourism destination, aiming to showcase the state’s breathtaking natural beauty while boosting the local economy.
The initiative revolves around the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project — India’s largest hydropower facility with a capacity of 2,000 MW. With four units already operational and full commissioning expected by December 2026, authorities see the massive pondage as a unique opportunity to create a high-value tourism ecosystem in one of the country’s most biodiverse river corridors.
The proposed tourism hub will focus on integrating eco-tourism, adventure activities, cultural experiences, and sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities. Officials emphasised that the project will leverage the region’s rich hydropower infrastructure alongside its pristine landscapes to attract both domestic and international visitors.
This development is expected to significantly enhance tourism infrastructure, generate employment, and promote responsible, sustainable growth in the area. By highlighting Arunachal’s natural and cultural assets, the hub aims to position the state as a premier destination in Northeast India.
The move reflects the government’s vision of harnessing infrastructure projects for broader socio-economic benefits while preserving the fragile Himalayan ecology.
