Villagers and IDPs Themselves Repair Neglected Khuga Dam Road in Manipur’s Churachandpur, Appeal for Government Support

Churachandpur: In a remarkable display of community initiative, villagers and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Churachandpur district have taken up the task of repairing the long-neglected Khuga Dam Road on their own.

The Khuga Dam Road, which connects several villages and serves as a vital link for local residents, had been in a severely dilapidated condition for years due to lack of maintenance. Frustrated by the prolonged neglect, local villagers along with IDPs staying in relief camps decided to step in and repair the road using whatever resources and manpower they could gather.

Volunteers, including men, women, and youth, have been manually clearing debris, filling potholes, and levelling the damaged portions of the road. The community-driven effort has been widely appreciated, but participants have appealed to the state government for immediate support, including supply of construction materials, machinery, and proper technical assistance to complete the repair work properly.

Locals pointed out that the poor condition of the road has been causing immense hardship, especially for students, patients needing medical care, and farmers transporting produce. Many IDPs who rely on this road for daily movement have also been severely affected.

This self-help initiative highlights the growing frustration among people in hill districts of Manipur over delayed government response to basic infrastructure needs amid the ongoing ethnic tensions and displacement crisis.

The development has once again drawn attention to the urgent need for the government to address deteriorating road infrastructure in remote and conflict-affected areas of the state.
