Pakke Kessang has taken a formal step towards resolving the long-standing inter-state boundary dispute with Assam with the installation of an official boundary pillar at Dikalmukh in the district, marking a move towards formal demarcation of the shared border.
Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge, who is also the MLA of Seijosa, was present at the site during the installation of the pillar. The initiative is aimed at formally identifying and strengthening the demarcation of the Arunachal Pradesh-Assam boundary at the district level.
Recognition for the District Administration
The Pakke Kessang District Administration has been nominated for the Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister’s Award in recognition of its work on the boundary demarcation initiative, underlining the significance the state government attaches to the effort.
The Namsai Declaration Framework
The boundary resolution process between the two states has been progressing under the Namsai Declaration, signed in July 2022, which laid the foundation for settling the decades-old dispute. Regional committees comprising ministers and officials from both sides have conducted joint field visits, examined historical records and interacted with local communities to arrive at mutually acceptable solutions.
Earlier, the first official border pillar between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh was erected at Seijosa in Pakke Kessang district, with joint teams of senior officials from both states closely monitoring the installation to ensure accuracy and mutual agreement. Deputy commissioners of Pakke Kessang and Assam’s Biswanath district were among those present, along with community leaders and village heads.
A Decades-Old Dispute
The Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary has remained a contentious issue for decades, with occasional flare-ups affecting border villages. Both states have taken steps in recent years to resolve the dispute peacefully and establish clearer demarcation of their shared border, which stretches across several hundred kilometres.
Chief Minister Pema Khandu has described the pillar installations as historic milestones, reflecting the spirit of the Namsai Declaration and marking a transition from decades of uncertainty towards peaceful coexistence, clarity and stability for communities living along the border.
