One state. Two completely opposite weather nightmares — happening at the exact same time.
Arunachal Pradesh is living a bizarre weather paradox right now. While the eastern districts are getting hammered by relentless monsoon rain and thunderstorms, the state capital Itanagar is sweating through a heatwave — something that rarely happens here in the middle of July. The India Meteorological Department and the Itanagar Capital Region administration are both on high alert, and honestly, they have every reason to be.
Orange Alert in the East — And It’s Serious
The IMD has slapped an orange alert on Namsai and Lohit districts for July 7, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning. That’s not a drill. A yellow alert covers several other central and eastern districts, with widespread rain expected across the state. Come Wednesday, Tirap district joins Namsai under the orange alert umbrella. The rain is expected to ease gradually from Thursday, but parts of eastern and southern Arunachal will remain under weather watch even then. For communities already dealing with flash floods and blocked roads from earlier rains, this fresh spell of heavy downpours is the last thing they needed.
Meanwhile, Itanagar is Sweltering
Here’s the part that catches you off guard — just a few hundred kilometres away from those drowning eastern hills, Itanagar is baking. The ICR district administration has issued a formal heatwave advisory after the IMD flagged above-normal temperatures in the capital region. Residents have been told to stay indoors between noon and 3 PM, dress in light cotton, drink plenty of water, and avoid anything strenuous under the open sky. Alcohol and caffeinated drinks are out. ORS, lemon water, buttermilk — that’s what the administration is pushing. If anyone starts feeling dizzy, weak, or faint, the advice is clear: get to a doctor immediately.
Government Machinery Kicked Into Gear
The administration isn’t just issuing advisories and walking away. The Health Department has been directed to stock up ORS, essential medicines, IV fluids and ice packs at hospitals and Anganwadi centres, while keeping a close eye on heat-related illness cases. Schools have been asked to reschedule timings and pull kids off the playground during peak heat hours. The Power Department has been told to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply — especially to hospitals and schools. These aren’t just instructions on paper; given the situation on the ground, they need to be followed with urgency.
A State That Cannot Afford to Look Away
Arunachal Pradesh has always been at the mercy of the monsoon — but a heatwave advisory running parallel to flood warnings is a new kind of challenge. Climate patterns are shifting, and this week is a stark reminder of that. Authorities need to stay nimble, and people across the state — whether they’re ducking from rain or hiding from the sun — deserve nothing less than a fast and coordinated response.
When one end of your state is underwater and the other is gasping from heat, there’s no room for slow governance.
