Zubeen Garg Death Probe: One-Man Inquiry Commission to Record Statements of Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta at Haflong Jail

Haflong: The one-man inquiry commission probing the death of renowned Assamese singer and activist Zubeen Garg will record the statements of two key individuals — Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta — inside Haflong Jail on April 14.

The commission, headed by retired District and Sessions Judge M. Deka, was constituted by the Assam government to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding Zubeen Garg’s death in September 2025.

Both Shekhar Jyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahanta are currently lodged in Haflong Jail in connection with the case. The commission has decided to record their statements in jail to expedite the inquiry process and maintain transparency.

Zubeen Garg, one of the most influential voices in Assam’s cultural and socio-political landscape, passed away under mysterious circumstances in Singapore last year. His death triggered massive public outrage and demands for a high-level probe across the state.

The inquiry commission was formed following sustained pressure from civil society, student organisations, and political parties. The commission is expected to examine all aspects of the case, including medical reports, travel history, and possible foul play.

The development is being closely watched across Assam, with many hoping that the statements recorded tomorrow will provide crucial leads in uncovering the truth behind the popular singer’s untimely death.
