Tawang: Chief Minister Pema Khandu on April 9 formally dedicated the re-rated Kitpi Mini Hydel Project (2 x 1.5 MW) to the people of Tawang district, marking a significant boost to local power supply.
The project, located on the Kitpi River, has been successfully upgraded and re-rated to generate 3 MW of electricity. This enhancement will provide reliable and quality power to several villages in and around Tawang, addressing long-standing electricity issues in the border district.
While inaugurating the project, CM Pema Khandu expressed happiness that the people of Tawang would now get better and uninterrupted power supply. He said the re-rated project reflects the state government’s commitment to strengthening small hydropower infrastructure in remote and strategically important areas.
“This is a step towards making Tawang self-sufficient in power generation. We are continuously working to improve electricity access in every corner of the state,” the Chief Minister said.
The Kitpi Mini Hydel Project was originally commissioned years ago but had been operating below its potential. After technical upgradation and re-rating, it is now functioning at full designed capacity with improved efficiency.
Local residents and panchayat leaders welcomed the development, stating that reliable electricity will improve daily life, support education, healthcare facilities, and small businesses in the region.
The dedication of the Kitpi project is part of the state government’s broader push to harness mini and micro hydel potential across Arunachal Pradesh for sustainable and decentralised power generation.
