Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) KT Parnaik has strongly advocated for granting international status and global recognition to the National Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (NIMAS) at Dirang in West Kameng district.
While addressing a gathering at NIMAS on April 8, the Governor highlighted the institute’s strategic location in the Eastern Himalayas and its immense potential to become a world-class centre for mountaineering, adventure sports, and high-altitude training.
Governor Parnaik emphasised that NIMAS is uniquely positioned due to its proximity to some of the highest peaks and challenging terrains in the region. He urged the Centre to accord it the status of an International Centre of Excellence in mountaineering and allied sports.
“NIMAS has the natural advantage and infrastructure to emerge as a global hub for adventure sports training. With proper support and recognition, it can attract trainees and mountaineers from across the world,” the Governor said.
He also stressed the need to expand training facilities, introduce advanced courses in high-altitude rescue, skiing, paragliding, and eco-tourism, and strengthen international collaborations. The Governor noted that upgrading NIMAS would not only boost adventure tourism in Arunachal Pradesh but also create employment opportunities for local youth.
NIMAS, established in 2013 under the Ministry of Defence, currently offers various certificate and diploma courses in mountaineering, trekking, and allied sports. It has already trained thousands of personnel from the armed forces, police, and civilians.
The Governor’s pitch for global recognition is being seen as a significant push to position Arunachal Pradesh as a major destination for adventure sports and mountaineering on the world map.
