Tawang: Arunachal Pradesh has made history by hosting the first-ever Open National Ski Mountaineering Championship at the scenic Panga Teng Tso Lake in Tawang. The event was formally inaugurated on April 5, 2026, marking a major milestone for winter sports development in Northeast India.
Organised under the “Winter Adventure Tawang 2026” initiative, the championship aims to promote adventure tourism, nurture young talent in snow-based sports, and place the Northeast firmly on India’s winter sports map.
A 10-day training camp for ski and snowboarding is currently underway from April 5 to April 14, with the main championship competitions scheduled for April 15, 2026. Athletes, coaches, and winter sports enthusiasts from across the country are participating in the event.
The high-altitude terrain and natural snowfall around Panga Teng Tso Lake provide an ideal setting for ski mountaineering. Officials believe the championship will not only identify and groom new talent but also boost tourism and create livelihood opportunities for local youth in Tawang and surrounding areas.
This landmark event is seen as a significant step towards building structured winter sports infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh and encouraging greater participation in snow sports from the Northeast region.
