A devastating incident in Arunachal Pradesh’s capital claimed the lives of four labourers when continuous heavy rainfall triggered a landslide, causing a protection wall to collapse at a construction site in Niti Vihar, Itanagar. The mishap occurred around 4 pm, burying seven workers under dense mud and debris in the hilly terrain.
Rescue operations involving Itanagar police, SDRF teams, and district officials swiftly recovered all seven trapped individuals from the rubble. Tragically, four were declared dead on the spot or shortly after, while the remaining three sustained injuries and were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
The deceased have been identified as:
- Choki Tasar (23)
- Godak Raja (30)
- Godak Tabin (35)
- Ratan Barman (26)
Itanagar Capital Region Superintendent of Police Jummar Basar noted that incessant rains made the soil extremely unstable and muddy, significantly hampering rescue efforts. The wall, part of an under-construction site, gave way due to the landslide’s force, sending mud sliding down and trapping the workers.
This tragedy highlights the recurring risks faced by labourers in Arunachal’s fragile, rain-prone hilly regions, especially during the monsoon season when landslides become more frequent. Authorities are likely to probe the incident further to assess site safety measures and structural stability.
The loss has sent shockwaves through the local community, underscoring the need for enhanced precautions at construction sites in vulnerable areas to prevent such fatal accidents amid unpredictable weather patterns.
