In a major blow to the Indian National Congress in Assam, prominent leader Abul Mia has resigned from the party and formally joined the regional outfit Raijor Dal. Abul Mia, a respected figure with deep grassroots connections in Dhubri district, previously held key positions including General Secretary of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) and Vice President of the Dhubri District Congress Committee. His departure highlights growing internal challenges within the Congress unit in Assam.
The move stems from dissatisfaction over recent organizational issues, including disagreements on ticket distribution following the delimitation process. The delimitation redrew constituency boundaries, significantly expanding areas like the Gauripur seat—which now covers 33 panchayats—leading to friction over candidate nominations. Reports indicate that the selection of sitting Golakganj MLA Abdus Sobhan Ali Sarkar for the reshaped Gauripur constituency played a role in fueling discontent among some leaders.
Political analysts view this switch as a setback for Congress in lower Assam, where it has traditionally relied on strong local support. Mia’s influence in the region could fragment the party’s voter base in key areas, potentially creating a more competitive, multi-cornered contest and boosting Raijor Dal’s standing in western Assam.
