A high-level combined review meeting was convened in Changlang district headquarters to assess and enhance the state’s readiness for the upcoming monsoon season, forest fires, and other natural disasters. The session brought together key officials from multiple departments to ensure coordinated, proactive measures across Arunachal Pradesh’s vulnerable regions.
The meeting was chaired by East Arunachal Commissioner (in-charge of disaster management coordination) and attended by:
- Changlang Deputy Commissioner
- Superintendent of Police
- Divisional Forest Officers
- Fire & Emergency Services officials
- SDRF (State Disaster Response Force) representatives
- Representatives from Rural Development, Power, PWD, Health, and other line departments
Key focus areas and decisions taken during the review include:
- Monsoon Preparedness Pre-identification of vulnerable landslide-prone stretches along highways (especially Trans-Arunachal Highway, Miao–Bordum–Vijaynagar road, and other strategic routes). Stockpiling of essential relief materials, sandbags, tarpaulins, medicines, and food packets at strategic locations. Coordination with BRO (Border Roads Organisation) and PWD for pre-monsoon road clearance, slope stabilization, and drainage improvement works.
- Forest Fire Prevention & Control Deployment of additional fire-watch teams in high-risk reserve forest areas and community forest zones. Intensified awareness campaigns in villages located near forest fringes to prevent man-made fires during jhum (shifting cultivation) burning season. Strengthening coordination between Forest Department, Fire Services, and local communities for early detection and rapid response.
- General Disaster Readiness Updation and activation of district-level disaster management plans with special emphasis on flood-prone river basins (Noa-Dihing, Burhi-Dihing, Tengapani). Mock drills and training sessions for SDRF, police, and community volunteers scheduled before the onset of heavy rains. Ensuring 24×7 functionality of emergency control rooms and helplines.
The Commissioner directed all departments to submit detailed action-taken reports within 15 days and stressed zero tolerance for any lapses during the critical monsoon period. He also appealed to the public to avoid risky behavior near rivers, avoid burning in forests without permission, and report early signs of fire or landslides to the nearest authority.
This proactive multi-departmental review reflects Arunachal Pradesh’s heightened focus on minimizing loss of life, property, and ecology during the challenging monsoon and fire seasons in the Eastern Himalayas.
