Tawang: Chief Minister Pema Khandu inaugurated the Wudong Mentoh Rhododendron Festival 2026 at Thingbu in Tawang district on April 11, describing it as a beautiful celebration of nature, culture, and tourism.
The annual festival, which showcases the spectacular bloom of rhododendrons in the high-altitude landscapes of Tawang, aims to promote eco-tourism and highlight the rich biodiversity of the region. This year’s edition is being organised with the theme of connecting nature, culture, and sustainable tourism.
While inaugurating the festival, CM Pema Khandu said the Wudong Mentoh Rhododendron Festival has emerged as one of the most important tourism events in Tawang. He expressed hope that the festival would attract more domestic and international tourists and create new livelihood opportunities for local communities.
“Rhododendron is not just a flower for us — it is a symbol of our pristine environment and rich biodiversity. This festival beautifully blends our natural beauty with our unique Monpa culture,” the Chief Minister said.
The event features cultural performances by local artists, traditional Monpa dances, local cuisine stalls, and guided nature walks to rhododendron hotspots. Several varieties of rhododendrons, including the rare ones found in the high mountains of Tawang, are on display.
The Chief Minister also stressed the need for responsible tourism that protects the fragile Himalayan ecology while benefiting local people.
The Wudong Mentoh Rhododendron Festival is organised jointly by the Tawang district administration, Tourism Department, and local stakeholders. It is expected to continue for several days and is likely to draw a large number of visitors.
