Itanagar: The vibrant Pongtu Kuh Festival, the traditional New Year celebration of the Nyishi community, was observed with great enthusiasm across Arunachal Pradesh, reinforcing the state’s rich cultural heritage and indigenous identity.
The festival, which marks the beginning of the Nyishi New Year, was celebrated with traditional rituals, folk songs, dances, and community feasts. People offered prayers to the almighty Donyi-Polo (Sun and Moon) for peace, prosperity, and good health in the coming year.
This year’s celebrations gained special significance as community leaders and elders used the occasion to strongly advocate for the preservation and promotion of indigenous culture, language, and traditions. Many speakers highlighted the growing challenges of modernisation and external influences and called for concerted efforts to protect the unique cultural identity of the Nyishi and other tribes of Arunachal Pradesh.
Senior leaders emphasised the need to pass on traditional knowledge, customs, and values to the younger generation. They stressed that festivals like Pongtu Kuh play a crucial role in strengthening community bonds and keeping indigenous heritage alive.
The Pongtu Kuh Festival is not just a celebration but also a powerful platform for cultural assertion and reflection on the future of tribal identity in the face of rapid development and globalisation.
The enthusiastic participation of youth alongside elders during the festival has been seen as a positive sign that the new generation is actively engaging with and taking pride in their roots.
