Itanagar: In a powerful display of grief and solidarity, thousands of people took part in a massive candlelight rally in Itanagar on April 9 to pay tribute to Yapi Potom, the young teacher who was brutally murdered in Upper Subansiri district.
The rally started from the Vivekananda Kendra and proceeded through the main streets of the capital complex, with participants holding candles and placards demanding justice for the deceased teacher. Students, teachers, civil society members, women’s groups, and common citizens walked together in silence to express their outrage and sorrow.
Yapi Potom, a dedicated government school teacher, was allegedly murdered by her husband and his family members on April 5. The shocking incident has sparked widespread anger across Arunachal Pradesh, with many demanding strict punishment for the accused and better protection for women.
During the rally, speakers strongly condemned the rising cases of violence against women and called upon the state government and police to ensure speedy justice. They also urged society to break the culture of silence around domestic abuse and gender-based violence.
The emotional procession concluded with a prayer meeting and the lighting of candles at a central point in Itanagar, where participants observed a minute of silence in memory of Yapi Potom.
This large-scale public demonstration reflects the collective demand for justice and highlights growing concern over women’s safety in the state.
