Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has expressed deep gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet after the Centre gave its approval to the massive 3,097 MW Kalai-II Hydroelectric Project in Anjaw district with an estimated cost of ₹14,105 crore.
The project, to be developed by the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) as a run-of-the-river scheme on the Lohit River, is one of the largest hydropower initiatives in the state. Once completed, it will significantly boost Arunachal Pradesh’s power generation capacity and contribute substantially to India’s renewable energy goals.
In a statement, CM Pema Khandu said:
“Heartiest congratulations and thanks to our visionary Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji and the Union Cabinet for approving the 3,097 MW Kalai-II Hydro Electric Project in Anjaw district at an estimated cost of ₹14,105 crore. This is a historic decision for Arunachal Pradesh.”
The Chief Minister described the project as a game-changer for the state’s economy. He highlighted that it will generate substantial direct and indirect employment opportunities, improve local infrastructure, and bring long-term revenue to both the state and the Centre through power generation and royalty.
Kalai-II is part of Arunachal Pradesh’s ambitious plan to harness its vast hydropower potential, often referred to as the “Power House of the Nation.” The project is expected to play a key role in the socio-economic development of the remote and strategically important Anjaw district in eastern Arunachal.
This approval comes as a major boost for the hydropower sector in the Northeast and reflects the Centre’s continued focus on developing the region’s enormous energy resources.
