Itanagar: The Arunachal Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) on April 6 demanded the immediate resignation of Chief Minister Pema Khandu on moral grounds following the Supreme Court’s directive to the CBI for a preliminary inquiry into alleged irregularities in the allotment of public works contracts worth over ₹1,270 crore to firms linked to his relatives.
APCC president Bosiram Siram welcomed the apex court’s order, describing it as a serious indictment of alleged corruption and misuse of power under the BJP-led government. He claimed the contracts awarded between 2015 and 2025 to companies allegedly owned by the CM’s family members, including his spouse and nephew Tsering Tashi, amounted to a betrayal of public trust.
Siram urged Khandu to step down immediately pending the outcome of the probe, stating that it was a matter of moral responsibility. He also demanded a free, fair, and time-bound investigation, preferably under judicial monitoring, to ensure transparency and prevent any undue influence on the probe.
The Congress leader further criticised the Prime Minister’s “zero tolerance” policy on corruption, calling it ineffective in Arunachal Pradesh.
The Supreme Court on April 6 directed the CBI to register a preliminary enquiry within two weeks and submit its report within 16 weeks. The court asked the Arunachal Pradesh government to fully cooperate with the agency and appoint a nodal officer for coordination.
Meanwhile, CM Pema Khandu has welcomed the CBI inquiry, saying it would help “clear the air” and reinforce transparency in governance.
The development has intensified political heat in the state just days after the Assam Assembly polls and amid ongoing political activities in the Northeast.
