Patna: A group of young women from Arunachal Pradesh was allegedly subjected to racist remarks and humiliation at a government hospital in Patna, Bihar, triggering widespread anger and condemnation across the Northeast.
The disturbing incident took place on April 2 when the women were stopped from using a public washroom by a hospital staff member. In a video that has now gone viral, the attendant is seen demanding identity proof and allegedly using derogatory slurs such as “Momo”, “Chinki”, and “Chinese” while mocking the women.
One of the victims, who recorded the incident, expressed deep disappointment, saying they feel unsafe travelling outside the Northeast because of such repeated discriminatory behaviour.
The video has drawn sharp reactions from people across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Nagaland, and other northeastern states. Many have described the episode as yet another painful example of racial bias and insensitivity faced by people from the region in mainland India.
This latest case comes shortly after a similar incident in Delhi in February 2026, where three Arunachalee women were racially abused by a neighbour. Such recurring episodes have once again raised serious concerns about the safety and dignity of northeastern citizens in other parts of the country.
Several voices from the Northeast have demanded strict action against the hospital staff involved and called for greater sensitisation programmes among public service employees regarding cultural diversity and respect.
The Arunachal Pradesh government and student organisations are expected to take up the matter with authorities in Bihar.
