Khonsa (Tirap): In a significant boost to security efforts in the region, a cadre of the banned outfit ULFA-I surrendered before security forces in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district on April 3.
The militant, identified as Jintu Gogoi alias Arun Asom (23), a resident of Hachara village under Sivasagar district of Assam, laid down arms at the Superintendent of Police’s office in Khonsa. He surrendered in the presence of police, Assam Rifles, and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.
During the surrender ceremony, Gogoi handed over a 7.65 mm Italian-made pistol, one magazine, and 10 rounds of live ammunition.
According to officials, the surrender reflects the continued success of security forces in persuading militants to give up violence and return to the mainstream. The authorities have assured full support for his rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
Tirap district, located in eastern Arunachal Pradesh and sharing a border with Assam, has historically witnessed occasional militant activity. Such surrenders are seen as positive developments that help strengthen peace and stability in the sensitive border region.
Further investigation into the surrendered militant’s background and possible links is underway.
This incident comes amid sustained counter-insurgency operations by security forces across Arunachal Pradesh and Assam to curb the influence of banned outfits like ULFA-I.
