Haflong: In a fresh setback to the Congress ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, senior leader and Dima Hasao District Congress Vice President Bapujit Langthasa resigned from the party and formally joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday.
Langthasa joined the BJP at the party’s district election office in Haflong in the presence of district BJP vice president Polal Rongkhol and other senior party workers. His switch comes just days before polling on April 9, significantly boosting the BJP’s prospects in the strategically important hill district.
Notably, Langthasa has had a varied political journey. He previously served as Dima Hasao district president of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) before joining the Congress. His latest move to the BJP marks yet another shift in his political career.
Speaking to the media after joining the saffron party, Langthasa said he was not comfortable working in the Congress due to lack of effective leadership and limited opportunities for young leaders in the hill district.
“Being in the opposition, it is difficult to work for the people. In Congress, there are limited opportunities for young leaders. I was not comfortable with the party’s functioning, which is why I decided to join the BJP,” he stated.
He also claimed that several leaders from the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee have already joined the BJP, reflecting growing discontent within the party in Dima Hasao.
His exit is being viewed as a major blow to the Congress’s organisational strength in the tribal-dominated hill district, especially at a time when the party is trying to consolidate its position against the ruling BJP-led alliance.
The development further intensifies the political churn in Assam as parties make final pushes before the single-phase Assembly elections.
