Itanagar: The Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) has issued a fresh directive asking all hotels, restaurants, and eateries in the capital region to remove direct references to specific meats such as pork, beef, chicken, mutton, or fish from their business names and signboards.
In an official order issued on April 2, 2026, Joint Commissioner Datum Gadi stated that several establishments have been using meat-specific names while obtaining trade licences. The civic body termed such naming practices “inappropriate” and against the spirit of public decency and animal welfare sensitivities.
Key Points of the Order:
- All existing hotels and restaurants must rename their businesses using general and neutral terms.
- No new trade licences will be granted to establishments with meat-specific names.
- Owners have been given 10 days to comply and update their signboards, hoardings, and promotional materials.
- Non-compliance may result in strict action under the Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 2019.
The directive has been circulated to all concerned officials for strict enforcement across Itanagar, Naharlagun, and the surrounding capital complex area.
This move by the Itanagar Municipal Corporation has sparked mixed reactions among restaurant owners and the public. While some have welcomed it as a step towards more inclusive naming, others feel it interferes with traditional business identity, especially in a region where pork and other meats form an important part of local cuisine and culture.
The IMC has maintained that the order aims to promote sensitivity and uniformity in commercial naming conventions in the state capital.
