Arunachal Pradesh to Host First-Ever National Ski Mountaineering Championship in April 2026

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh is set to make history by hosting the 1st Open National Ski Mountaineering Championship in April 2026, marking the formal beginning of organised snow sports in India’s Northeast region.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu described the event as a “landmark moment for Indian winter sports and tourism.” He announced that the championship will be held on April 15, 2026, following a 10-day training camp scheduled from April 5 to April 14, 2026.

The initiative aims to promote winter sports, identify and nurture local talent from Arunachal Pradesh, and position the state as an emerging hub for adventure and snow-based tourism. The high-altitude, snow-covered terrains of the state offer ideal conditions for ski mountaineering, an exciting discipline that combines skiing with mountaineering elements.

The training camp and championship are expected to attract athletes, trainers, and winter sports enthusiasts from across the country. It will provide a national platform for participants while giving local youth an opportunity to learn and compete in snow sports under professional guidance.

CM Pema Khandu emphasised that this is a “historic first” for the Northeast, opening new avenues for local athletes and boosting tourism in the region through adventure sports.

This development is seen as a significant step towards developing winter sports infrastructure and creating new livelihood opportunities in remote high-altitude areas of Arunachal Pradesh.

The state government, in collaboration with national sports bodies, is working to ensure smooth organisation of the event, which is likely to put Arunachal on the national winter sports map.
