Deomali (Tirap): A specialised 12-member expert team from Karnataka has arrived in Arunachal Pradesh to track and capture a rogue elephant that has been responsible for multiple human deaths in Tirap district over the past two years.
The team, led by senior veterinary officer and elephant specialist Dr. Ramesha H., reached Deomali on March 30. It comprises professionals experienced in elephant tranquilisation, wildlife monitoring, and trained mahouts from Karnataka’s established elephant camps.
The operation will involve the use of trained kumki elephants (tamed elephants used for capturing wild ones) along with advanced tools like thermal drones to locate the rogue animal in the dense forests. The primary goal is to safely tranquilise and relocate the elephant to minimise further risk to human lives while ensuring the animal’s welfare.
Range Forest Officer of Deomali, Diwang Lowang, appealed to local residents to stay alert and immediately report any sighting or movement of the elephant to the forest department. He stressed that active public cooperation would play a vital role in the success of the mission.
Human-elephant conflict has been a growing concern in several parts of Arunachal Pradesh, particularly in districts like Tirap, where expanding human settlements and agricultural activities often overlap with elephant habitats.
This inter-state collaboration highlights efforts to address wildlife management challenges using specialised expertise and modern technology. Officials are hopeful that the operation will bring relief to affected communities in Deomali and surrounding areas.
The forest department has urged people to avoid venturing into forests or agricultural fields alone during this period and to follow safety advisories issued by authorities.
