Itanagar Municipal Corporation Orders Hotels and Restaurants to Rename Establishments, Avoid Specific Meat References

Itanagar: The Itanagar Municipal Corporation (IMC) has directed all hotels and restaurants operating in the capital region to stop using business names that explicitly mention specific animal meats such as pork, chicken, beef, or mutton.

In an official order issued by Joint Commissioner Datum Gadi, the civic body observed that several establishments have been obtaining trade licences with names highlighting particular types of meat. The IMC described such naming practices as “inappropriate” and not in line with prevailing norms concerning animal welfare sensitivities and public decency.

Under the provisions of the Arunachal Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act, 2019, the corporation has instructed the following:

  • All existing hotels and restaurants with meat-specific names must rename their businesses using more general and neutral nomenclature.
  • No new trade licences will be issued in future with names referring to specific animal meats.
  • Owners must update signboards, hoardings, and promotional materials accordingly.

The order gives establishments 10 days from the date of issuance to comply. Failure to do so may invite legal action under relevant municipal laws and bye-laws.

The directive has been circulated to the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, and other concerned officials for strict monitoring and implementation.

This move by the Itanagar Municipal Corporation aims to promote more inclusive and sensitive business naming conventions in the state capital.
