Freedom Trail 2026 Flagged Off in Arunachal Pradesh: Retracing Dalai Lama’s Historic 1959 Escape Route

Zemithang (Tawang): The second edition of the Freedom Trail was formally flagged off on March 31 at Zemithang in Tawang district, Arunachal Pradesh. This six-day foot march retraces the historic path taken by Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama (Tenzin Gyatso) during his escape from Tibet and entry into India in 1959.

The trail begins at Kenzamani and concludes at Pungteng Tse on April 5. It commemorates the Dalai Lama’s journey through the rugged terrain of Arunachal Pradesh after the Tibetan uprising against Chinese rule. Historical records note that the Dalai Lama entered India through Kenzamani on March 31, 1959, and stayed at Pungteng Tse.

The event aims to promote the values of peace, resilience, compassion, and cultural heritage while fostering unity and spiritual reflection among participants.

The inaugural programme was attended by prominent dignitaries including Lungla MLA Tsering Lhamu, Tawang Zila Parishad chairperson Leki Gombu, the Abbot of Tawang Monastery, Lungla Additional Deputy Commissioner Tashi Dhondup, and officers of the Indian Army.

Addressing the gathering, MLA Tsering Lhamu highlighted the emotional and symbolic importance of the march. She noted that participants were walking the same path taken under extraordinary circumstances more than six decades ago. “This march symbolises unity, remembrance, and cultural pride,” she said, while welcoming all those taking part in the event.

Dignitaries offered special prayers for the long life and good health of the Dalai Lama. They urged people to imbibe and follow his teachings of compassion, peace, and harmony.

The Freedom Trail has now become an annual symbolic journey that honours this historic episode while strengthening cultural and spiritual bonds in the region. It also highlights Arunachal Pradesh’s significant role in one of the most important events in modern Tibetan and Indian history.
