Gaurav Gogoi Calls Himanta Biswa Sarma and Badruddin Ajmal ‘Two Sides of the Same Coin’ at Marikachar Rally

Marikachar (Assam): Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief Badruddin Ajmal, describing them as “two sides of the same coin” and “like uncle and nephew” during an election rally in Marikachar.

Addressing a public meeting in support of Congress candidate Mahibur Rahman, Gogoi alleged a political understanding and double standards in law enforcement between the two leaders. He pointed out that Congress leaders face arrest for remarks made outside the state, while no action is taken when Ajmal makes derogatory comments against the Chief Minister.

Gogoi asserted that the Congress had successfully defeated Ajmal’s “communal politics” in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections and would now defeat Himanta Biswa Sarma’s politics in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

He accused Sarma of political betrayal, recalling how former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi had mentored him during his time in the Congress before he switched sides. Gogoi also claimed that Sarma sidelined former Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal after the BJP returned to power in 2021.

Targeting the BJP’s ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the Congress leader alleged that several leaders with links to the AIUDF have joined the regional party. “Voting for AGP is equivalent to voting for AIUDF,” he remarked.

Gogoi highlighted the Congress party’s five key poll guarantees for Assam:

  • Justice for singer Zubeen Garg within 100 days
  • Financial assistance for women
  • Enhanced health insurance coverage
  • Pension scheme for senior citizens
  • Land pattas for indigenous people

Former Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who was present at the rally, extended strong support to Gaurav Gogoi’s leadership. He accused the Assam government of rampant corruption and urged voters to back the Congress in the 2026 polls.

The remarks come amid heightened political rhetoric as parties intensify campaigning for the Assam Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, 2026.
