Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has signalled a promising future for integrated hydropower development and eco-tourism after completing a landmark high-speed boat journey along the majestic Subansiri River. The nearly 45-kilometre expedition from the Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project site to the Sibe-Rite confluence demonstrated the river’s vast potential for both energy generation and adventure tourism.
Historic River Expedition Marks Milestone
Describing the event as “history in the making,” Chief Minister Khandu undertook the high-speed ride on March 28, calling it a proud moment for the state that had never been attempted before. He expressed gratitude to NHPC and all stakeholders for making the journey possible and ensuring its success.
Speaking to officials and locals after the ride, Khandu emphasised that such initiatives align with the national vision of a developed India by harnessing natural resources responsibly. The Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project, once delayed, has now gained fresh momentum and is slated to generate 2,000 MW of power by December 2026, positioning it as the country’s largest hydroelectric facility.
Boost to Hydropower and Community Participation
The Chief Minister highlighted that hydropower projects totalling nearly 19,000–20,000 MW are currently progressing across Arunachal Pradesh. He specifically appreciated the cooperation of local communities in districts including Kamle, Lower Siang, and Upper Subansiri, which has enabled large-scale investments while respecting local aspirations.
Khandu stressed that sustainable development remains a priority, with community involvement and environmental safeguards at the core of all projects.
Unlocking River Tourism Potential
Beyond energy, the expedition showcased the immense scope for river-based tourism in the region. Arunachal Pradesh’s pristine rivers, rich biodiversity, and scenic landscapes offer unique opportunities for high-end eco-tourism, water sports, and adventure activities.
The government plans to conduct a detailed survey and develop a comprehensive master plan for sustainable tourism. This includes promoting eco-friendly infrastructure, luxury experiences, and improved accessibility through initiatives like high-speed yachts. Such steps are expected to attract tourists, filmmakers, and investors, generating employment and economic growth for local communities.
Vision for Balanced Growth
Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Deputy Speaker Kardo Nyigyor, Hydropower Advisor Ninong Ering, and other senior officials, the Chief Minister reiterated that coordinated efforts can transform the Subansiri region into a major hub for responsible river tourism alongside hydropower development.
This integrated approach aims to create a balanced model of progress that preserves the environment while delivering socio-economic benefits to the people of Arunachal Pradesh.
