Environmental Public Hearing Held for 1,605 MW Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Subansiri District

Daporijo: A crucial environmental public hearing for the proposed 1,605 MW Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project was successfully conducted at Daporijo in Upper Subansiri district on Tuesday. The hearing, organised by the Arunachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board, forms an essential statutory step towards securing environmental clearance for the ambitious hydropower initiative.

The event saw active participation from local MLA Taniya Soki, Subansiri Upper Project Liaisoning Committee Chairman Rolen Dagam, senior district administration officials, representatives from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC), panchayat leaders, and a large number of local residents and stakeholders.

State Commerce and Industry Minister Nyato Dukam addressed the gathering and expressed confidence that the project would deliver transformative benefits to affected families while contributing significantly to the development of Arunachal Pradesh and the nation as a whole. He appealed to all stakeholders to extend full cooperation to NHPC for the smooth and timely implementation of the project. Dukam also assured that the report submitted by the Subansiri Upper project liaisoning committee would be forwarded to the state government for appropriate action in the best interest of the local people.

Project General Manager Ratan Sagar reiterated NHPC’s commitment to maximising benefits for local communities. He highlighted that, once completed, the project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, strengthen market and supply linkages, support robust Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, and add considerably to the state’s revenue.

Officials noted that a majority of stakeholders, including families likely to be affected, expressed support for the hydropower project during the hearing. Participants shared their views, concerns, and suggestions, which will be incorporated into the final environmental impact assessment report.

The 1,605 MW Subansiri Upper Hydroelectric Project is one of the major initiatives aimed at harnessing Arunachal Pradesh’s vast hydropower potential. The public hearing marks an important milestone in the project’s development journey, balancing the state’s development goals with environmental safeguards and local aspirations.
