Community-Driven Tourism Essential for Arunachal Pradesh’s Sustainable Growth: Deputy CM Chowna Mein

Namsai: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein has stressed that community-driven tourism holds the key to unlocking the state’s vast tourism potential while ensuring inclusive and sustainable development.

Speaking at the North-East India Tourism Confederation (NEITC) conference held in Namsai district — the first such major tourism event hosted by the district — Mein underlined the importance of active local participation for long-term success in the sector.

“Tourism in Arunachal Pradesh must be community-driven, with active involvement of tour operators, homestay owners, self-help groups and entrepreneurs,” he said. He added that a strong sense of ownership among local people is crucial for sustainable growth.

The Deputy CM advocated for responsible and sustainable tourism that is clean, green, inclusive, and well-regulated. He particularly highlighted the rapidly growing homestay sector and called for strict adherence to quality standards and guidelines to prevent unregulated expansion while preserving authenticity.

With improved road connectivity and infrastructure, Arunachal Pradesh is now better positioned to integrate with major national tourism circuits, creating new economic opportunities for local communities, especially in remote areas.

The conference brought together key stakeholders, including Rajendra Kumar Suman (Northeast Regional Director, Union Ministry of Tourism), NEITC President EB Blah, convention chairman Tsering Wange, Namsai Deputy Commissioner C R Khampa, and tour operators from across the Northeast region.

Mein’s address reflects the state government’s push to develop tourism in harmony with nature and local culture, empowering youth, women, and self-help groups while protecting Arunachal’s unique biodiversity and indigenous heritage.

This community-centric approach is expected to generate employment, boost rural economies, and position Arunachal Pradesh as a preferred eco-tourism and cultural destination in the Northeast.
