Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor Lieutenant General (Retd) KT Parnaik on Monday released a significant book titled “Prison Reforms in India: Contemporary Perspectives and Challenges” at a special function held in Itanagar.
The book, authored by senior IPS officer and former Director General of Prisons (Arunachal Pradesh & Mizoram) Dr. H. J. Dora, offers a comprehensive analysis of the Indian prison system, highlighting contemporary challenges, reform initiatives, and pathways for modernisation.
Governor Parnaik, while releasing the book, described prison reforms as a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of the criminal justice system. He emphasised the need for a humane, efficient, and rehabilitative approach to incarceration that focuses not only on punishment but also on reformation and reintegration of prisoners into society.
He appreciated Dr. Dora’s extensive experience and deep insights into prison administration, stating that the book would serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, prison administrators, academicians, and students working in the field of criminal justice.
The Governor further stressed that meaningful prison reforms are essential for upholding the dignity of prisoners, improving living conditions inside jails, enhancing vocational training and skill development programmes, and reducing recidivism.
Senior officials, academicians, and members of the police and prison fraternity attended the book release ceremony. Dr. Dora expressed gratitude to the Governor for releasing the book and hoped that it would contribute to informed discussions and positive changes in India’s prison system.
This publication comes at a time when several states, including those in the Northeast, are working towards modernising their prison infrastructure and adopting best practices in correctional administration.
