Arunachal Deputy CM Chowna Mein Distributes E-Rickshaws to 40 Beneficiaries Under Gram Bandhu Initiative in Namsai

Namsai: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Tuesday handed over electric rickshaws to 40 beneficiaries in Namsai district as part of the pilot phase of the Gram Bandhu initiative, aimed at boosting rural livelihoods through eco-friendly transportation.

The distribution event, held under the revamped Rashtriya Gram Swaraj Abhiyan (RGSA), saw 40 e-rickshaws being provided — 20 each for Namsai and East Siang districts in the initial stage. The scheme focuses on creating sustainable income opportunities, especially for members of self-help groups (SHGs), while promoting green mobility and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy CM Chowna Mein highlighted the dual benefits of the initiative. “The initiative would create sustainable income opportunities, particularly for members of self-help groups, while reducing dependence on fossil fuels,” he said. He stressed that Arunachal Pradesh, with its rich natural heritage, must pursue development in harmony with nature.

Mein further noted that rising reliance on petrol and diesel not only contributes to pollution but also puts economic pressure due to import costs. “Electric mobility is a practical and forward-looking solution,” he added.

The Gram Bandhu initiative is designed to improve last-mile connectivity in rural areas and promote economic empowerment among youth and women at the grassroots level. Mein urged the beneficiaries to ensure proper utilisation and maintenance of the e-rickshaws for the long-term success and sustainability of the project.

Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Minister Ojing Tasing, Namsai MLA Chau Zingnu Namchoom, and other senior officials were present during the distribution ceremony.

This move is expected to provide a significant boost to rural entrepreneurship and sustainable development in the state by offering affordable, pollution-free transport options that can help beneficiaries ferry passengers or goods and access better market opportunities.
