Arunachal Pradesh Bids to Host 4th North East Games 2026 in Itanagar, Submits Detailed Proposal to IOA

Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh has thrown its hat in the ring to host the prestigious 4th North East Games in 2026, with the Arunachal Olympic Association (AOA) formally submitting a proposal to the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) seeking approval to stage the multi-sport extravaganza in the state capital, Itanagar.

The bid comes on the heels of a resolution passed during the IOA Annual General Meeting in Ahmedabad on January 9, 2026, which encouraged regional and youth-focused sporting events to nurture emerging talent across India. The AOA’s proposal includes a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) covering essential aspects such as infrastructure upgrades, accommodation facilities, competition venues, transportation logistics, medical support, and overall event management to deliver a world-class experience.

AOA Secretary General Bamang Tago emphasized the strategic importance of the event for the Northeast region, stating that hosting the Games would provide a vital platform for young athletes from all eight northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim—to gain competitive exposure, build pathways to national and international levels, and foster greater regional unity through sports.

The proposed multi-sport event is tentatively scheduled from October 10 to 17, 2026, featuring 12 priority disciplines. Organizers anticipate participation from over 4,000 individuals, including athletes, coaches, officials, support staff, volunteers, and representatives from various sports bodies and state governments.

Previous editions of the North East Games, which began in 2018, have demonstrated success even with modest resources, relying heavily on host state support and regional collaboration. Arunachal’s bid aims to elevate these standards, positioning the state as a growing sports hub in the Northeast while promoting grassroots development and youth engagement in athletics.

The AOA has urged the IOA for timely approval and necessary backing to ensure smooth preparations and execution. Final dates and detailed schedules will be finalized in consultation with key stakeholders, including the IOA, North East Sports Association (NESA), other State Olympic Associations, and the Arunachal Pradesh government.

This ambitious proposal reflects Arunachal Pradesh’s commitment to sports infrastructure growth and regional cooperation, potentially boosting tourism, local economy, and athletic talent identification in one of India’s most scenic yet challenging terrains.
