Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested a 29-year-old man from Naharlagun for allegedly sending a death threat to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma through WhatsApp. The accused, identified as Krishna Dornal, a resident of Dolahtphulbari village (under Dolahat Police Outpost in Lakhimpur district, Assam), was taken into custody on Thursday following intelligence inputs shared by Assam Police.
According to Superintendent of Police, Itanagar Capital Region, Nyelam Nega, the accused initially sent a message to the Chief Minister’s official email address seeking financial assistance. When he received no response, he reportedly procured a WhatsApp number online and sent a threatening message warning of plans to shoot the Assam CM.
During interrogation, Dornal revealed that the act stemmed from financial troubles—he had allegedly misappropriated funds from a wine shop where he was associated. Facing demands from the shop owner to account for the money, he turned to the CM’s office for help before escalating to the threat.
The Arunachal Pradesh Police acted swiftly on the alert from their Assam counterparts, apprehending him from an IMFL shop in Naharlagun. He has since been handed over to Assam Police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
SP Nyelam Nega appealed to the public to exercise restraint and use social media and digital platforms responsibly. “Misuse of digital platforms or violation of the law will invite strict legal action,” he cautioned, underscoring the seriousness of threats against public figures and the rapid response capabilities of inter-state police coordination.
This incident highlights ongoing concerns over online threats and cyber-enabled crimes targeting high-profile individuals, even as authorities emphasize swift action to maintain law and order across neighboring states.
