Zeinguang Beach Emerges as Manipur’s Hidden Gem in Tamenglong, Draws Thousands Despite Severe Lack of Basic Facilities

Tamenglong: Zeinguang Beach, a scenic sandy riverbank along the Barak River in Bamgaijang village, Tamenglong district, has rapidly become a sought-after tourist destination in Manipur. Developed entirely by local volunteers using bamboo and other indigenous materials, the site was inaugurated on December 1 last year and has since welcomed over 10,000 visitors, including tourists from Nagaland, Bihar, and even international travelers from Japan.

Located about 30 km from Tamenglong district headquarters, Zeinguang Beach offers a serene, nature-rich escape with its calm river views and peaceful surroundings in a village home to around 700 residents. The spot, often called Manipur’s only “beach,” attracts visitors seeking tranquility and connection with nature, featuring basic amenities like tent accommodation, homestays, and motorboat rides.

Chingkhiuhiamang Phaomei, director of Zeinguang Beach, highlighted the community’s initiative: “Local residents came together to develop the site using locally available materials like bamboo. While tourist footfall has been encouraging, facilities remain limited.”

The influx of visitors has brought modest economic benefits to the local community, primarily reliant on seasonal farming. Small job opportunities and increased sales of local produce have emerged, providing a boost to livelihoods.

However, the growing popularity contrasts sharply with the absence of essential infrastructure. Current facilities are rudimentary and substandard due to financial constraints, with no proper road connectivity, adequate sanitation, reliable electricity, or a nearby Primary Health Centre. Locals have called for government recognition of the site as an eco-tourism destination and urged interventions under national schemes like Swadesh Darshan and Vibrant Village Programme.

Key demands include improved tourist infrastructure, better road access, enhanced sanitation and power supply, and the construction of a suspension bridge over the Barak River to link Bamgaijang with neighboring villages, improving accessibility and tourism potential.

Despite these challenges, Zeinguang Beach stands as a testament to grassroots efforts in promoting sustainable tourism in remote areas of Manipur. With targeted support, it holds immense promise to become a major eco-tourism hotspot, driving regional development and showcasing the Northeast’s natural beauty.
