Prof. Mahendra P. Lama Addresses Myanmar Parliamentarians, Spotlights Northeast India’s Key Role in Regional Cooperation

Nay Pyi Taw: Renowned academician, economist, and expert on Northeast India Prof. Mahendra P. Lama delivered a significant address to a large gathering of nearly 600 newly elected parliamentarians from both houses of Myanmar’s parliament. The event, part of the Forum on the Dawn of a New State focusing on Trust, Stability & Development, took place in Nay Pyi Taw and featured high-level discussions on regional connectivity, food security, governance, and cross-border collaboration.

Prof. Lama, drawing from India’s experiences—particularly those in the Northeast region—emphasized successful efforts in conflict resolution, governance reforms, and development initiatives. He underscored Northeast India’s strategic importance as a bridge for enhanced cooperation with Myanmar, advocating stronger ties to boost trade, infrastructure development, and cultural exchanges for mutual economic growth.

Highlighting India’s Act East Policy, Prof. Lama stressed the potential of regional processes to foster deeper integration between neighboring countries. He called for collaborative approaches to address shared challenges like food security through value-added production, organic farming, and energy projects, positioning the Northeast as a vital hub for sustainable regional progress.

The programme included an inaugural address by Myanmar’s Acting President Min Aung Hlaing, who outlined priorities for the discussions. A multi-country panel featured experts from Thailand, China, India, Myanmar, and Europe, deliberating on cross-border connectivity, institutional strengthening, and food security strategies.

India’s Ambassador to Myanmar Abhay Thakur, along with diplomats and senior officials, attended the event. In recognition of his extensive contributions to academic discourse and policy on regional development, Prof. Lama was felicitated by Acting President Min Aung Hlaing.

This engagement reflects growing emphasis on people-to-people and institutional linkages between Northeast India and Myanmar, leveraging shared borders, cultural affinities, and economic complementarities to advance stability, development, and prosperity in the region amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
