Guwahati: In a major development boosting opposition unity in Assam, the Indian National Congress has finalized an alliance with Raijor Dal, allocating 11 Assembly seats to the regional party ahead of the 2026 Legislative Assembly polls. The breakthrough, involving Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi, comes after prolonged negotiations and recent setbacks in talks.
The seat-sharing agreement was reached following intensive discussions, with Congress agreeing to let Raijor Dal contest from 11 constituencies: Sivasagar, Dalgaon, Dhing, Sissiborgaon, Digboi, Bokakhat, Manas, Tezpur, Kaliabor, Margherita, and Mariani. Additionally, Goalpara East and Gauripur have been designated as “friendly contest” seats, where both parties will field their candidates without direct mutual opposition.
This alliance marks a significant step in consolidating anti-incumbency sentiments against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the ruling BJP. Congress is already partnered with other opposition groups, including Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM), Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation (CPIML), and All Party Hill Leaders Conference (APHLC). The inclusion of Raijor Dal strengthens the broader opposition front, aiming to present a united challenge in the high-stakes elections.
Gaurav Gogoi, who has been spearheading efforts to expand the coalition, had earlier expressed optimism about reaching a consensus despite tight timelines. The final proposal received necessary approvals, paving the way for this formal tie-up.
The development follows a period of friction, with earlier reports of stalled talks and mutual accusations over seat demands and approach. However, the eventual agreement signals a pragmatic resolution to avoid vote splits in key areas and maximize opposition impact against the incumbent government.
With seat-sharing largely settled between Congress and Raijor Dal, the opposition landscape in Assam is taking a clearer shape. This coalition is expected to focus on issues like governance, regional rights, and anti-establishment narratives to mobilize voters across diverse constituencies.
The 2026 Assam Assembly elections are shaping up to be fiercely contested, with opposition parties prioritizing unity to counter the BJP’s dominance in the state.
