Jharkhand Mukti Morcha Announces Plans to Contest 31 Seats in Assam Assembly Elections, Targets Tribal and Tea-Tribe Votes

Guwahati/Ranchi: The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), led by Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, has decided to field candidates in 31 assembly constituencies in the upcoming Assam Legislative Assembly elections. This move marks the party’s strategic expansion beyond its home state, aiming to position itself as a stronger national player while championing the cause of tribal communities in Assam.

The decision was taken during a central committee meeting of senior JMM leaders. The party has emphasized its focus on representing the large concentration of tribal people in Assam, particularly the tea-tribe communities—many of whom trace their origins to Jharkhand’s Chhotanagpur region. With an estimated population of around 70 lakh, these groups, including tea garden workers, have long voiced concerns over social, economic, and political marginalization.

JMM general secretary Vinod Pandey highlighted the party’s rationale, noting that Assam’s tribal population, especially those with roots in Jharkhand, requires stronger political representation to address their aspirations. He pointed out that Chief Minister Hemant Soren has built trust among these communities through multiple visits to Assam since 2024, raising issues related to tribal rights and welfare.

Hemant Soren has positioned the campaign around “development, dignity, and rights of tribals,” vowing to become the voice for those facing challenges not only in Assam but also in states like Manipur and elsewhere. Soren has previously written to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, expressing concerns over the condition of tea tribes and advocating for Scheduled Tribe status for them.

The party has already submitted a list of 20 star campaigners to the Election Commission, including Hemant Soren, his wife Kalpana Soren, senior leaders such as Sarfaraz Alam and Mahua Maji, and several Jharkhand ministers. This signals an aggressive outreach plan targeting tea garden and Adivasi-dominated belts, particularly in Upper Assam, where tribal votes could prove decisive in several seats.

While the JMM has confirmed its intent to contest independently in these 31 seats, discussions on potential alliances— including with opposition parties like Congress—remain ongoing. Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi has met Soren recently, sparking speculation about coordination to avoid vote splits in tribal-heavy areas.

This development adds a new dimension to Assam’s 2026 assembly polls, with the JMM leveraging its tribal-centric identity to challenge the dominance of established players like the BJP and Congress. The party aims to build a sustained organizational presence in the state, focusing on issues of resource welfare, dignity, and greater political recognition for marginalized tribal groups.
