A serious law-and-order controversy has erupted in Dhubri town, Assam, after the son of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Nazrul Hoque and his private security guard (bouncer) were accused of physically assaulting a local resident. The incident, which took place on the evening of March 17, has drawn sharp criticism from locals over alleged high-handed behavior and misuse of influence.
The altercation began when Amitabh Nandy, a resident of Dhubri, discovered his residential gate blocked by a vehicle reportedly belonging to the MLA’s son. Nandy approached the individuals present and politely requested them to move the vehicle to allow entry to his property. What started as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into violence.
According to eyewitness accounts, the MLA’s son left the scene shortly after the confrontation began, while his private security guard—identified as Ali, a resident of Cooch Behar, West Bengal—allegedly pushed Nandy to the ground, manhandled him, and caused visible injuries, including marks on his neck. Locals described the act as an unwarranted assault on a citizen for simply asserting his right to access his own home.
The episode has sparked significant outrage in the community, with residents expressing deep concern over the incident. One eyewitness remarked: “It is deeply concerning that a resident cannot even ask for his gate to be cleared without being physically assaulted.” Many have highlighted the troubling trend of private bouncers being used to intimidate ordinary people, raising questions about accountability and the rule of law in the area.
As of now, it remains unclear whether a formal police complaint has been lodged or if any arrests have been made. Authorities have not issued an official statement on the matter.
This development comes amid heightened political activity in Assam ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, where Dhubri remains a key constituency for AIUDF. The allegations have intensified scrutiny on the conduct of political families and their associates, potentially impacting public perception in the region.
The incident underscores ongoing concerns about maintaining law and order in sensitive border districts like Dhubri, where minor disputes can quickly escalate and fuel community tensions.
