In a significant development shaking up Assam’s political landscape, the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has formally broken away from the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The decision, driven by deep-seated ideological rifts with the BJP, comes at a crucial juncture as parties ramp up preparations for the Assam Legislative Assembly elections.
UPPL Vice President Dr. R.N. Sinha announced the exit during a media interaction in Kokrajhar, emphasizing that prolonged ideological divergences left no room for continued alliance. The party has chosen to chart an independent course, focusing on its core regional agenda and aspirations in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and beyond.
This split follows earlier tensions, including uncertainties over seat-sharing arrangements within the NDA. UPPL, which has a strong base among Bodo communities, released its first list of candidates for seven key constituencies shortly after the Model Code of Conduct came into effect. The list, approved by party president Pramod Boro, includes prominent names such as:
- Aninda Basumatary from Gossaigaon
- Raju Kumar Narzary from Dotma (ST)
- Lawrence Islary from Kokrajhar (ST)
- Nerswn Boro from Bhergaon
- Dipen Boro from Udalguri (ST)
- Kamalsingh Narzary from Bijni
- Pramod Boro from Tamulpur (ST)
UPPL plans to contest all 15 assembly seats in the BTR and aims to secure victories in at least 11 of them, while also targeting additional seats outside the region to expand its influence.
The departure is poised to alter electoral dynamics in western Assam, particularly in Bodo-dominated areas where identity politics and regional issues dominate voter priorities. By going solo, UPPL could split votes that previously aligned with the NDA, potentially benefiting opposition forces or creating triangular contests in several constituencies.
As the high-stakes 2026 Assam polls approach, this move highlights the fragility of alliances in the state’s diverse political ecosystem and underscores the growing assertiveness of regional players like UPPL in pursuing independent strategies.
