Woodcut Artwork by Jompi Ete Installed at Arunachal CM Office, Celebrating Indigenous Heritage

A striking woodcut artwork created by renowned Arunachal Pradesh artist Jompi Ete has been installed at the Chief Minister’s Office in Itanagar, serving as a powerful tribute to the state’s rich tribal heritage and artistic legacy.

The piece, titled “Echoes of the Ancestors”, is a large-scale woodcut print depicting traditional motifs, mythical figures, and everyday life elements drawn from the Adi, Nyishi, Galo, and other indigenous communities of Arunachal Pradesh. Using intricate carving techniques passed down through generations, Ete has captured the essence of cultural continuity, harmony with nature, and spiritual depth that define the state’s tribal identity.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu personally unveiled and appreciated the artwork during a brief ceremony, describing it as “a living symbol of who we are — proud inheritors of ancient wisdom, vibrant traditions, and artistic brilliance.” He emphasized that displaying such indigenous creations in key government spaces helps reinforce cultural pride and inspires younger generations to value their roots.

Jompi Ete, widely regarded as one of Arunachal’s most accomplished contemporary artists working in woodcut and printmaking, expressed his gratitude:

“This installation is not just about my work — it is about giving visibility to the artistic traditions of our tribes. When people walk into the CMO and see this, I hope they feel connected to our land, our stories, and our ancestors.”

The artwork was commissioned under the state’s initiative to promote and preserve indigenous art forms through public and institutional spaces. It joins a growing collection of tribal-inspired installations across government buildings in Itanagar, aimed at blending modern governance with cultural affirmation.

Art lovers, cultural historians, and visitors to the CMO have praised the piece for its bold lines, rich symbolism, and emotional resonance. The installation is expected to become a point of pride for Arunachal Pradesh and a reminder of the state’s deep artistic heritage.
