Arunachal Pradesh Set to Host U-23 Tri-Nation Football Championship 2026

Arunachal Pradesh is gearing up to host the prestigious U-23 Tri-Nation Football Championship 2026, a major international youth tournament featuring India, Bhutan, and Myanmar. The event will mark one of the biggest footballing showcases ever organized in the state and is expected to significantly boost sports tourism, youth engagement, and regional connectivity in the Northeast.

The championship is scheduled to take place in Itanagar with matches played at the Indira Gandhi Park Football Stadium and other upgraded venues in the capital complex. The Arunachal Pradesh Football Association (APFA), in collaboration with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the state government, will oversee the tournament.

Key highlights of the announcement:

  • Participating Teams — India U-23, Bhutan U-23, Myanmar U-23
  • Format — Round-robin league followed by a final (or direct knockout depending on final confirmation)
  • Dates — Tentatively set for late 2026 (exact window to be finalized after consultation with AIFF and AFC)
  • Objective — Provide competitive exposure to young Indian players ahead of AFC U-23 Asian Cup qualifiers, while strengthening football ties with neighboring countries

Chief Minister Pema Khandu welcomed the decision, calling it a proud moment for Arunachal Pradesh. He stated:

“Hosting an international U-23 tri-nation tournament is a big leap for sports in our state. It will inspire thousands of young boys and girls, showcase our hospitality, and put Arunachal on the global football map. We are committed to delivering world-class arrangements and making this event a grand success.”

The state government has assured full support, including:

  • Upgradation of stadium facilities and floodlighting
  • Improved accommodation and logistics for teams, officials, and fans
  • Enhanced security and medical arrangements
  • Promotional campaigns to attract spectators from across the Northeast and beyond

The tournament is seen as part of the broader push to develop football infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh, following the success of previous national-level events and the growing popularity of the sport among local youth.

Football enthusiasts and sports lovers in the region are already excited about the prospect of watching international matches live in Itanagar, with expectations running high for thrilling contests and memorable moments.
