Zubeen Garg Honoured Posthumously with Three Filmfare Awards 2026 in Emotional Tribute

In a moving and unprecedented recognition, legendary Assamese singer, composer, actor, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg was posthumously conferred three Filmfare Awards 2026 for his outstanding contributions to Assamese cinema and music. The awards ceremony, held in Mumbai, became one of the most emotional moments of the night as the industry paid tribute to the icon who passed away in 2025.

Zubeen was honoured in the following categories:

  • Best Music Director – for the soundtrack of the blockbuster Assamese film Rongmon
  • Best Playback Singer (Male) – for his soulful rendition of the title track in Rongmon
  • Best Lyricist – for penning deeply resonant and culturally rooted lyrics in the same film

The posthumous recognition marks a historic first for an Assamese artist at the Filmfare Awards, underscoring Zubeen’s towering influence not only in Northeast India but across the national music and film landscape. He was widely regarded as the face of modern Assamese pop and Bihu music, having composed, sung, and acted in over 100 films and released thousands of songs that became anthems for generations.

Accepting the awards on behalf of the family, Zubeen’s wife Gargee Roychowdhury (also a noted singer and actress) delivered an emotional speech that left the audience in tears. She said:

“Zubeen lived for music, for Assam, and for love. These awards belong to every person who ever sang his songs in joy or found comfort in them during pain. He always said — ‘music has no boundaries.’ Today, the whole country is singing his name.”

Several Bollywood and regional film personalities paid glowing tributes on stage and social media, calling Zubeen “the voice of the Northeast,” “a cultural ambassador,” and “one of the greatest musical geniuses India has produced.”

The triple honour has sparked widespread pride across Assam and the Northeast, with fans, political leaders including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and cultural organizations celebrating the moment as a long-overdue national acknowledgment of Assamese talent.

Zubeen Garg’s legacy — blending traditional Bihu rhythms with contemporary sounds — continues to inspire millions. These Filmfare Awards serve as a powerful reminder of his unmatched contribution to Indian music and cinema.
