The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), a key ally in Assam’s ruling NDA coalition, has announced its decision to contest 21 Assembly constituencies in the 2026 Assam Legislative Assembly elections. The announcement reflects the party’s growing confidence and strategic focus on consolidating its influence, particularly in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) and adjacent districts.
UPPL President Urkhao Gwra Brahma confirmed the decision after internal deliberations and consultations with party leaders across the state. He emphasized that the seats chosen represent areas where the party has strong organizational presence, historical support among the Bodo community, and realistic chances of victory.
Key highlights from the announcement:
- Geographical focus — The majority of the 21 seats fall within the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) districts (Kokrajhar, Chirang, Baksa, Tamulpur, Udalguri) and neighboring constituencies with significant Bodo and tribal populations.
- Alliance context — UPPL remains a committed NDA partner. The final seat-sharing formula with BJP and other allies (such as AGP) is still under discussion, but UPPL has staked its claim on these 21 seats to ensure adequate representation and bargaining power.
- Performance reference — In the 2021 Assembly elections, UPPL won 6 seats and played a decisive role in government formation. The party aims to significantly increase its tally in 2026, capitalizing on its governance record in the BTR and development initiatives under the Bodoland Territorial Council.
- Campaign themes — UPPL leaders highlighted promises centered on tribal rights, implementation of the Bodo Accord, infrastructure development in BTR, employment generation, education, and cultural preservation.
The announcement comes at a time when seat-sharing talks within the NDA are progressing, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma indicating that a final formula is likely to be sealed by mid-March 2026. UPPL’s clear position on 21 seats is expected to shape the broader coalition negotiations.
On the opposition side, the INDIA bloc (Congress, Raijor Dal, AJP, and others) is also engaged in intense seat-sharing discussions, making the 2026 Assam elections one of the most keenly watched political battles in the Northeast.
UPPL’s move signals its ambition to emerge as a stronger regional force while maintaining its strategic partnership with the BJP-led NDA.
