Massive Protest Erupts at Rajiv Bhawan Over Dalgaon Seat-Sharing Buzz as Raijor Dal–Congress Workers Threaten Mass Resignations

Hundreds of Congress workers and supporters of Raijor Dal staged a large-scale demonstration outside Rajiv Bhawan (Assam Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters) in Guwahati on February 25, 2026, expressing strong resentment over ongoing seat-sharing negotiations for the Dalgaon Assembly constituency ahead of the 2026 Assam elections.

The protestors, carrying banners and raising slogans against any possible adjustment of the Dalgaon seat to an alliance partner, warned that they would resign en masse from the party if the Congress high command agrees to cede the seat to Raijor Dal or any other INDIA bloc ally.

Key highlights from the agitation:

  • Demonstrators alleged that informal discussions have already taken place to offer Dalgaon — a Congress stronghold with a significant Muslim voter base — to Raijor Dal in exchange for support in other constituencies.
  • Senior Congress leaders from Dalgaon and surrounding areas addressed the crowd, asserting that the seat has been consistently won by Congress candidates for decades and should not be “sacrificed” for alliance arithmetic.
  • Protesters displayed placards reading “Dalgaon is Congress’s pride — no compromise”, “Save Dalgaon from Raijor Dal”, and “We will resign if seat is given away”.
  • Several speakers threatened to submit collective resignation letters to AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge if the party agrees to the reported seat-sharing formula.

The Dalgaon constituency has historically been a Congress bastion, with strong community support and multiple consecutive victories. Any move to concede it is seen by local workers as a betrayal of grassroots cadre loyalty and organizational strength in the area.

Congress state leadership has so far maintained silence on the specific seat-sharing status, stating that final decisions rest with the central election committee and alliance coordination committee. However, the intensity of the protest has put additional pressure on negotiators as the mid-March deadline for finalising the INDIA bloc seat-sharing arrangement approaches.

Raijor Dal, led by Akhil Gogoi, has been vocal about contesting a significant number of seats, including those with strong anti-BJP sentiment in Lower Assam. Whether Dalgaon becomes part of that bargaining remains a flashpoint that could impact grassroots morale in both parties.

The protest underscores the challenges of maintaining unity within the opposition alliance in Assam, where seat distribution often leads to internal friction and cadre discontent.
