Residents of a remote village in Assam have publicly challenged the state and central governments’ repeated assertions of achieving near-total rural electrification, revealing that their hamlet has remained without electricity for nearly eight decades.
In a powerful video statement circulating widely on social media, villagers from the area—located in one of the state’s interior districts—expressed deep frustration and anger over unfulfilled promises dating back to Independence in 1947. They displayed defunct electric poles, rusted wires, and households still relying on kerosene lamps and solar lanterns, directly contradicting official claims of 100% household electrification under schemes such as Saubhagya and Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana.
Key points raised by the villagers include:
- No functional electricity connection has ever been provided to the village despite multiple survey teams visiting over the years.
- Repeated assurances during election seasons have not translated into actual power supply.
- Children study under dim torchlight, health risks from kerosene lamps persist, and basic appliances remain out of reach.
- The nearest electrified settlement is several kilometers away, yet the village continues to be excluded from grid expansion projects.
In a strongly worded ultimatum, the villagers declared that if electricity is not provided before the upcoming Assam Assembly elections (expected in March–April 2026), the entire village will boycott voting as a mark of protest. They stated:
“We have waited 78 years. Governments come and go, but darkness remains our constant companion. If we do not see poles being erected and wires charged before the elections, not a single vote will be cast from this village.”
The video has sparked sharp reactions online, with users questioning the accuracy of official electrification statistics and demanding accountability from both the Assam government and the central power ministry. Opposition parties, including Congress and AIUDF, have seized on the issue to accuse the ruling BJP of inflating achievements while ignoring genuine ground realities in remote pockets.
Local administration officials have responded by saying a fresh survey will be conducted and the matter will be taken up on priority. However, villagers remain skeptical, pointing to similar promises made—and forgotten—in previous election cycles.
This incident once again highlights the gap between reported national electrification figures and the lived reality in some of Assam’s most isolated areas, raising serious questions about last-mile delivery in rural power infrastructure.
