NDA Seat-Sharing in Assam to be Finalised by Mid-March, Confirms CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that the seat-sharing arrangement among National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections will be finalised by the middle of March 2026. The statement brings clarity to the much-awaited alliance formula ahead of the crucial polls.

Speaking to the media in Guwahati, Sarma said the BJP high command is actively engaged in discussions with alliance partners, including the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and other smaller constituents. He expressed confidence that a mutually acceptable formula will be reached soon, allowing the NDA to present a united front against the opposition INDIA bloc.

Key points from the Chief Minister’s statement:

  • Seat-sharing talks are at an advanced stage and expected to conclude by mid-March.
  • The BJP will contest the majority of seats, while allies will be accommodated in their areas of influence to maximise winnability.
  • Emphasis was placed on maintaining the NDA’s strong performance from the 2021 Assembly polls and the recent Lok Sabha results in the state.
  • Sarma reiterated that the coalition remains cohesive and focused on development, peace, and good governance as its core campaign planks.

The announcement comes at a time when opposition parties, particularly Congress and its allies, are intensifying efforts to forge a strong counter-alliance in Assam. Seat-sharing clarity within the NDA is seen as a strategic advantage, allowing the ruling coalition more time to finalise candidates, campaign strategies, and booth-level preparations.

The Assam Assembly elections are likely to be held in March–April 2026 along with other states. The NDA’s performance in Assam will be closely watched, given the state’s political significance in the Northeast and its impact on national narratives.
