One Killed, Three Injured After SUV Plunges into Gorge in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Kameng District

A tragic road accident in Arunachal Pradesh claimed one life and left three others seriously injured when an SUV veered off the road and fell into a deep gorge in the East Kameng district on Saturday.

The incident occurred near the remote stretch between Bhalukpong and Bomdila on the Trans-Arunachal Highway. According to police reports, the vehicle (bearing registration AS-12-B-XXXX) lost control on a sharp curve, skidded off the narrow mountain road, and tumbled down approximately 100–150 feet into a steep ravine.

Casualties and Rescue Efforts

  • One passenger was declared dead at the scene due to severe head and internal injuries.
  • The three injured individuals sustained multiple fractures, head trauma, and lacerations.
  • Local villagers and passing motorists immediately alerted authorities, prompting a swift rescue operation involving the East Kameng Police, District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) personnel, and nearby residents.
  • The injured were extricated using ropes and stretchers before being rushed to the nearest Primary Health Centre in Bhalukpong, where they received initial treatment. They have since been referred to a higher medical facility in Tezpur or Itanagar for advanced care.

Senior police officials confirmed that excessive speed, poor visibility due to foggy conditions, and the challenging topography of the highway likely contributed to the mishap. An FIR has been registered, and a detailed investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause, including possible mechanical failure or driver error.

This accident once again highlights the persistent dangers posed by Arunachal Pradesh’s high-altitude, winding mountain roads, especially during winter months when fog, landslides, and icy patches increase risks. Authorities have urged all motorists to exercise extreme caution, maintain safe speeds, and ensure vehicles are in good condition while traveling on border highways.

The deceased and injured belonged to a family traveling from Assam to visit relatives in Tawang. Condolences have poured in from local leaders, with calls for improved road safety measures and better emergency response infrastructure in remote districts.
