Arunachal Police Dismantle Cross-Border Narcotics Network, Arrest Two in Major Drug Bust

Arunachal Pradesh Police have achieved a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking by busting an active cross-border narcotics supply route and arresting two individuals involved in the illegal operation.

The operation was carried out by a joint team of the Special Task Force (STF), Capital Police, and intelligence units in and around Itanagar and Papum Pare district. Acting on specific intelligence inputs about a consignment of contraband being moved through the state, the team conducted a targeted raid that led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of psychotropic substances.

Key recoveries from the operation include:

  • Over 1.2 kg of heroin (high-purity grade)
  • 4,500+ tablets of methamphetamine (commonly known as Yaba)
  • Cash amounting to ₹3.8 lakh suspected to be drug proceeds
  • Two mobile phones, digital weighing scales, and packaging materials used for distribution

The arrested persons have been identified as:

  • Rohit Kumar (28), a resident of Papum Pare district, believed to be the main local handler and distributor.
  • Sonam Tsering (35), originally from a border village in Anjaw district, suspected of acting as the key link for cross-border procurement from neighboring countries.

Preliminary investigations reveal that the seized narcotics were being smuggled across the porous Indo-Myanmar border through remote routes in eastern Arunachal Pradesh before being transported to Itanagar for further distribution to markets in Assam, Nagaland, and other northeastern states.

Both accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985. They are currently in police custody, and interrogation is ongoing to trace the larger syndicate, identify upstream suppliers, and uncover downstream distribution networks.

This bust is part of intensified anti-narcotics drives across Arunachal Pradesh, particularly focusing on transit routes that feed into the broader Northeast drug corridor. Police officials have reiterated their commitment to dismantling such networks and urged citizens to share credible information to curb the menace of drugs in the region.

The successful operation has been widely appreciated by local communities and civil society groups concerned about the rising drug abuse problem among the youth in border districts.
